How to stay secure with Clue

Your privacy and digital security are at the heart of everything we do at Clue.

Recent police guidance in the UK allows officers to access phones and check menstrual tracking apps after a pregnancy loss. Understandably, this has raised serious concerns about the potential for personal health data to be used against people.

That’s why we want to be clear about our stance at Clue.

How we keep your data safe

As we highlighted in our response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade—we are, and always will be, committed to safeguarding your privacy.

We have never—and will never—share your private health data with authorities. No matter where you are in the world, your data is safeguarded under strict German and European data privacy laws.

Alongside reaffirming this commitment, we also want to share a few simple steps to help you take control of your data security. Knowing how to protect your data is especially important if your phone is lost, stolen, or accessed without your consent. 

Below, you’ll find guidance for Android and iOS devices—plus tips from our security expert to help you feel safer and more in control of your data.

For Android users

1. Know how to remotely wipe your phone: If your phone is lost or stolen, you can use Google Find My Device to erase everything on it.

2. Enable Clue’s app lock: Go to the Clue app settings and turn on Passcode/TouchID/FaceID. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring your device’s biometric login to unlock the app.

3. Set up data wipe after failed login attempts: Some Android phones let you automatically erase the data after too many wrong passcodes. Check under Settings > Security > Encryption if this is possible on your device.

4. Enable theft detection: If your phone supports it, turn on Theft Protection so your phone locks if someone tries to grab it and run. Be sure to enable “Offline device lock” so the device locks itself if internet access is restricted.

5. Hide the Clue app in a secure folder: Some phones (like Samsung) let you hide apps in a private, password-protected folder.

6. Keep your phone up to date: Always install the latest software updates, and avoid downloading apps from unknown sources. Enable automatic updates if possible.

For iPhone users

1. Know how to remotely wipe your phone with iCloud: If your phone is lost or stolen, go to Find My iPhone to erase all data remotely.

2. Turn on Clue’s app lock: Open the Clue app and enable the Passcode or FaceID setting. This adds an extra layer of protection using your device’s built-in security.

3. Enable auto-wipe after failed passcode attempts: Go to Settings > Touch/Face ID & Passcode and turn on the option to erase all data after 10 failed logins.

4. Hide Clue with a third-party app: Some apps allow you to hide Clue from your home screen. This adds extra privacy if someone gains access to your phone.

5. Keep your phone updated: Turn on automatic updates to keep your device secure.

Expert tips for extra protection

Here are some additional tips from our security expert to help protect your data and device—no matter what phone you use:

• Know how to request data deletion from Clue: Clue members can request to have their personal data deleted anytime. You just need access to the email you used to sign up.

• Ensure your device is secured: FaceID is convenient but less secure. Fingerprint or PIN codes provide better security. 

• Consider using a VPN: A VPN (Virtual Private Network) can help hide your internet traffic. This helps protect your privacy online by preventing third parties from seeing what you’re accessing.

• Change your DNS settings: DNS is like your device’s address book for the internet. Using a private DNS (like Quad9 or Cloudflare) can prevent others from seeing that you use Clue.

• Avoid using public Wi-Fi or shared internet hotspots: Public internet in places like airports or cafés can be risky. Use your own mobile data when possible.

• Set your screen to lock quickly: Make sure your phone locks automatically after a short time—ideally within a minute.

• Keep your phone with you: Don’t leave it unattended in public spaces or shared environments. Avoid sharing your device if possible.
